Bearings or friction reducers come in a wide array of sizes, types and configurations. They are typically divided into two groups; ball bearing or roller bearing. Ball bearings come in likely the largest amount of variations, some of which being single row conrad, max type, self aligning, sealed, shielded, double row, tapered bore, straight bore, cylindrical outer, bevelled outer, agriculture type hex bore. They also come in various precisions; ABEC1 , ABEC3, ABEC5, ABEC7 and even ABEC9.

Some consider the future to be hybrid bearings with ceramic balls and phenolic retainers made in materials such as stainless steel, 52100 steel, as well as plastic. Un-mounted roller bearings also come with the following types of rolling elements; needle, cylindrical roller, spherical roller, tapered roller, and even in combination roller/thrust designs.
